"My father ignited a spark for photography when he gave me my first camera at the age of ten: a Kodak Instamatic. I was fascinated by the way a camera made me see the world from a totally different perspective. But it wasn't until High School, when I was introduced to the magic of the black and white darkroom, that the spark became a flame. I still remember the thrill of seeing a print evolve before my eyes, and to this day, black and white photography remains one of my favourite forms of expression. I prize the style's ability to truly capture the essence of a scene; the tale of the moment. I began to dream of being a photojournalist, where I could capture and experience the world's stories. Unfortunately, life's twisting road led me elsewhere for many years, and it wasn't until 2006 that I picked up the camera again, and have rarely put it down since.
My devotion to the environment led to my fascination for capturing the abstract beauty of nature, and its many textures, patterns, layers and colours. My hope is to help focus people's attention on the dazzling array of mother nature's extraordinary creations. My deep connection to the ocean and interest in the world's most common, overlooked and often disregarded objects, have resulted in developing my niche of photographing the ocean's endless bounty. I also love to photograph the dynamics of people's interactions with the world's surroundings, including its ancient relics and nature's attempts to reclaim them. Thus, cultural and environmental themes also fascinate me. I am also very committed to environmental and humanitarian causes. As I am a firm believer in everyone doing their part to help humanity and our planet, 50% of all proceeds from my image downloads and print sales are donated to CARE International (CARE) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
I do not feel I create art from these themes, but simply have the privilege of capturing the natural beauty already present in all its forms. My expression is therefore only limited by what captures my imagination, and my desire to see. I believe my optimistic, down-to-earth approach is what allows me to embrace this road less traveled, with all its ups-and-downs. Photography for me is a passion, and brings into perspective the magnificence of the world we live in. It also drives home the tremendous impact humans have on the environment, and each other.
The photographer yields a great deal of power in how an image is interpreted and the story it tells. It is within their power to portray a warped, malignant image, or a truthful and uplifting one. My goal is to share an accurate glimpse into the world around us and that it brings enlightenment, hope, positive change and encourages us to be the best we can be. I believe in the journey; not the destination, and I intend on packing my life's journey to the fullest. Everywhere I look there is a reminder of how much beauty and wonder there is still left in the world to discover. My hope is that through creative means, I can do my small part to support the preservation of this planet's natural state, and to encourage the harmonious balance between people and their environment, for the sake of all future generations. I can envision a world where we all live in peace, with compassion and tolerance. Where we cherish each other's spirits and uniqueness, and above all protect the world around us, which provides us with our very sustenance. Can you?"
