Eureka Dunes — also known as the singing dunes are in a small corner of Death Valley that adjoins the California side of the White Mountains. When conditions are right — which is often — and you walk on the dunes you can hear them humming. It is all about shifting sand and vibrations — or, to quote the Beach Boys — good vibrations But getting there from inside Death Valley can be challenging. The road is very rough and cars have a tendency to break down. A much better approach is to go to the town of Big Pine, California, on Highway 395, and ask for directions. Ideally, the road is paved most of the way and the remaining dirt road is only modestly bumpy. There is a nice parking area but be prepared for windy conditions and protect your camera from blowing sand. Enjoy.
