A Photograph Is Not Taken

I'm not the author who said, "A photograph is not taken, it is made", but that is my experience. After you take that decent picture, it yields it's potential when it is cropped well and the important elements have been brought into prominence by lightening and darkening specific elements, color correcting, selectively adjusting contrast, and other editing. I’ve always been surprised when people have commented that they thought I just aimed and pressed the shutter and must be incredibly lucky or very smart finding pictures. (I wish I were both.)

I’m a nut for clouds. The landmark Hotel Baker in St. Charles, IL has been the subject of a lot of photographs. About the only creative way to get a somewhat unique image of the hotel was to let Mother Nature make a contribution and the day this was shot, the clouds offered great impact.
