Beauty in a Series

Bird of Paradise Flower, Strelitzia sp.
Buy this picture
The bird of paradise flowers are born on a stout beak shaped plant part called a spathe. A series of flowers bloom one at a time on the spathe. You can see the remnants of the old flower behind the blooming one in the photo. In its native range, the plant is pollinated by a bird, therefore the stoutness of the spathe. It has to be strong enough to hold a bird.
