This residential canal was created prior to 1967 by a construction method called pump and fill. This area was originally coastal marsh. Dredges were brought in to dredge out the canal, the dredged material was pumped into the area adjacent to the canal to created a strip of land wide enough to build a street with houses on each side of the street. A moratorium on this construction practice was imposed in 1967 when the importance of the coastal marshes to fishery populations was understood. This kind of construction today would require permits from multiple agencies, which would be denied.
