Exhumed by relentless waves on the Otago coast are the mythical remains of water gourds, washed ashore from the Maori canoe Āraiteuru, which brought the Ngāi Tahu people to the South Island. Otherwise known as septarian concretions, the unusually spherical Moeraki Boulders are a famous holiday destination. Busloads of tourists arrive late, missing out on the colourful sun rise. I preferred an angle of reflection, with the sun, looking at the boulders from offshore, getting my feet wet in the surf.
