Hazel grouse searching food on a speckled alder tree

Buy this picture
It's autumn in Sweden and a hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia) is balancing carefully over very thin twigs of a speckled alder tree (Alnus incana) to pick seeds. The colors and pattern of the bird's plumage blend in with the pattern of twigs and bark.
The grouse was so immersed in its food search that it barely recognized my presence.
