Mother Cardinal

Female Cardinal on nest

A pair of cardinals decided to nest in the sweet tea olive outside my bedroom window. I set up my tripod and camera at the window so I could take a few photos each day. I knew mother birds were excellent parents. However, I didn't really understand the depth of that devotion until I watched the female pant as she set on the eggs to shade them from the midday sun and then crouch on the nest with her wings and tail spread to keep the chicks dry from the rain. I also noticed that by the time the chicks left the nest, the female looked harried and worse for wear. Having raised kids myself, I did understand that.
